DANTE ACOSTA TALKS ABOUT 2012 CONGRESSIONAL RACE

“Our 2012 campaign for U.S. Congress was just the beginning. There is still much to be done. My name may not be on the ballot this November but my message is in the hearts and minds of the voters and will only continue to grow. There is no stopping an idea whose time has come. I am proud to be a part of this movement that is sweeping the nation. In this primary season, we have witnessed, in nearly every state, grass-roots candidates overtaking establishment status-quo incumbents.

My message of Constitutional accountability and adequate representation obviously resonated with the voters. My campaign promised to rectify the CEMEX Mine issue once and for all as well as guarantee that our soldiers receive the protection they deserve. Our service men and women put their lives on the line to protect our country; we owe it to them to provide security forces that truly keep them secure.

I ran as a candidate who stood up and directly challenged the status-quo of a “tenured” 20-year incumbent that is no longer representing the district’s constituents. It is apparent that the people of our district are equally fed up with the business-as-usual politicking of our day. I have talked with people from all backgrounds, political affiliations and socio-economic circles who embrace my convictions. They desire, as I do, to bring a voice to the People. No more back-door deals, no more special interest favors.

The time has come for genuine representation and accountability. My campaign took a big step forward in accomplishing these goals and the people of our district are ready for change. I am very pleased with the progress we made with so little resources and against a 34 year political machine. We managed in less than three months to capture 13% of the vote in a crowded field and 18% in Santa Clarita, the incumbent’s home turf! With half of the time and a mere fraction of the dollars per vote spent by my competitors, we were able to reach deep into the community and spark a passion. Folks once disheartened and discouraged about the state of our government have stepped up to be a part of something they can believe in. I am honored to have them stand by my side.

I want to thank each and every one of you who voted, prayed, made calls, walked precincts, donated funds, hosted events, waved signs, endorsed me, gave me advice or helped this campaign in any way. Your efforts have honored me and my family with your love and support. We have made so many new friends along the way and are blessed to have met you.

To my volunteers, my wonderful (and patient) family but especially to God, thank you for making this all possible. – Dante

Dante Acosta is a Republican running for Congress in California’s 25th District. He’s one of two Republican primary challengers to incumbent Buck McKeon. He agreed to an interview with SCVTalk and his answers are below.

SCVTALK:Tell us about your background and why you are running for US Congress?

ACOSTA : I am the middle of five children and was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. My father died when I was 11 so my mother raised her five children alone.

When I was 8 years old, we moved from Studio City to Granada Hills which was a great place to grow up. We had very little money in those years but my mother worked hard holding three jobs to make ends meet and somehow we managed. She eventually started a bridal shop that became a successful family business. We often came to Santa Clarita to Hart Park and ate Moore’s Sub sandwiches and played in the park.

As a young man, I had a paper route, swept floors, emptied trash at an auto garage, delivered flowers, was an assistant manager for an auto parts store, worked in fast food restaurants and for a camera store chain. I went to work as a rookie new car salesman for a Chevrolet dealership in San Fernando eventually becoming the General Sales Manager, overseeing all aspect of new and used car sales and the Finance and Insurance departments managing over 50 people and about $50,000,000 in sales in today’s dollars.

For over 20 years I have worked as a financial advisor and I am currently a Senior Financial Advisor assisting individuals, small business and institutions with their investment, retirement and wealth planning needs.

I have been married to my wife Carolyn, who works in the medical field, for 26 years this May 31st. We live in Canyon Country with our two surviving children, Allie, 16 and Doran, 11. Since day one we were very involved in their lives, volunteering at school, coaching little league, directing school plays and teaching Sunday school at church. Carolyn and I were even docents at the William S. Hart Museum. I have served on various boards, lectured on business and military issues and have hosted national business and political events.

I am running for office because I learned firsthand that this district is not being adequately represented. Congressman McKeon is out of touch with his constituents and is beholden to large defense contractors and other donors. After Rudy was killed, I started looking for answers and accountability through Mr. McKeon and his committee. Other than asking us to speak at Rudy’s prayer vigil and sending a few letters requesting an investigation that had already been ordered by the Army, Mr. McKeon was missing in action for nearly six months. As he stalled, more soldiers were killed at the hands of their “trusted” Afghan partners and protectors. Over the past year, I personally witnessed the nepotism, political control and ineffectiveness that is happening in the district and looked for a candidate that I could get behind to run against McKeon. No one came forward, so at the urging of many in the community I decided to run for office myself to provide better representation for the district.

SCVTALK: SCVTalk readers pay close attention to the news and were extremely saddened when they read of the death last year of your son Rudy, one of several SCV soldiers and Marines to die in Afghanistan in recent years. Many readers and residents went to Rudy’s funeral procession, and much has been written about your son’s life, the circumstances of his death, and your reaction to it. Tell us, if you will, something about Rudy that we’re not aware of.

ACOSTA : Rudy was an exceptional, heroic and dedicated young man. He was also a humorous and often silly “kid” who loved to make people laugh. He played varsity football and volleyball for Santa Clarita Christian School, acted in school plays and frankly, stole the show! He loved In-and-Out burgers and his favorite meal, in fact the first one he asked for when he came home on leave for the last time, was Siam Rice on Soledad Canyon and Sierra Highway. We have a special photo of Rudy with the owner taken that night.

Rudy also had a really big heart for people. His first date with his girlfriend was spent helping her feed her grandmother who was dying from cancer. He held the grandmother’s hand and talked with her as they fed her. What has not been reported widely but was told to us by soldiers that were there when Rudy was killed was that during the attack Rudy told a female medic to run and “covered her” as she escaped the gunfire saving her life.

SCVTALK: You list “Free Markets” as one of your campaign planks on your website. Where do you stand on the Dodd-Frank Financial Regulation bill and would you vote to bail out a bank or financial institution, as Buck McKeon did, if economic authorities said the bank’s failure could threaten the US and Global economies?

ACOSTA : America has not operated under a truly Free Market System for a long time. The 2008 Bank Bailout (TARP) is the best and most recent example of government playing two roles in the economy. Not only is it tasked with being/controlling the regulator of our financial system, in many cases it is also a market participant. TARP is the most recent and relevant example of this very poor policy. Congressman McKeon himself has agreed that in hindsight, he might not have voted for TARP. He blames this change of heart on the claim that the Bush administration and the Treasury Department pressured lawmakers to approve this deal with the country’s largest banks. So, even knowing at the time that TARP would give appointed bureaucrats the unprecedented power to pick winners and losers in the banking industry, he went against his better judgment and voted for TARP. I too now get the benefit of hindsight but my long career in banking and investments told me that TARP did not pass the smell test. Transferring huge sums of public dollars to the already richest banks in the nation, who along with other banks made bad investments, served only to force out small community banks and created mergers that cut competition and reduced customer sentiment towards the industry that I have loved being a part of.

This incident also draws another lesson about Congressman McKeon that I would like to share with voters. I know of several community members that reacted negatively to the news that Congressman McKeon helped President Bush ‘save the free market by abandoning free market principles’. Instead of reaching out to those constituents to explain his vote, he dealt very harshly with their perceived petulance. As your Congressman, I will not react harshly to criticism and will endeavor to have a dialogue, within reason, with those that have opposing points of view.

SCVTALK: If you were elected to Congress as a Republican, how would you work to secure Santa Clarita from the negative consequences of a CEMEX mine in Soledad Canyon? Would you partner with a Democrat to advance such an agenda? Would you push for a CEMEX fix even if it meant violating a supposed Earmark ban in the House?

ACOSTA : I am running as a Republican and will caucus with the Republican Party. However, I will work tirelessly to insure that the Cemex mine is stopped! As far as working with the Democrats, it is vital for both parties to work together on important issues or nothing gets done. In fact, I will be reaching out to several of my personal contacts in the Democratic Party to begin the process of stopping Cemex. Yes, I would push for a fix no matter what it takes as long as it is ethical, doesn’t violate the constitution and is in the best interests of the district.

SCVTALK: On your website, you say you are a “pro-military advocate.” What are your views on the Afghanistan conflict? Do you agree with the President’s strategy and if so, why? If not, why not?

ACOSTA : By pro-military, I am referring to being committed to our servicemen and women first. As most of your readers are aware, on March 19, 2011, we lost our son, Army SPC Rudy Acosta, to an Afghan terrorist masquerading as a base guard while Rudy wason base serving as a Combat Medic in Afghanistan. As a Gold Star father I support 100% the mission that our men and women in uniform are committed to by the Commander-In-Chief and the military officers that serve at the President’s pleasure. It serves no legitimate purpose to denigrate our war-fighting capabilities or the mission our soldiers are fighting for. However, in looking at the future, we will need to honestly assess the sentiment of the American people, our probable financial commitment and the state of readiness of our military forces before committing them to another foreign war. Undoubtedly the bar has been raised as to the type of justification that will be required in order for me to approve the commitment of troops to new foreign theatres. And all foreign intervention should come through the Congress for a vote.

SCVTALK: As Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Buck McKeon is perhaps the most vocal voice in Washington on the need to protect the Defense budget from cuts. Is he going about his role the right way, and would you do anything different than him?

ACOSTA : The Congressman must thread a needle in his role as the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. On one hand, he must keep America able to sustain its current commitments in Afghanistan and elsewhere and I give him and his committee high marks in this area. On the other hand they must continually be preparing the military for the challenges of the future. Whether it is in humanitarian work or, God forbid, another foreign war, today’s military equipment and the way our troops are organized is not going to get the job done. Without going into detail, we are spending too much money to keep aged equipment running and are supporting troop deployments that harkens to the Soviet era. The type of missions that our servicemen and women engage in today cries out for better force protection protocols and tactics. Why are Afghans being hired as guards to protect our soldiers through a $4,000,000 DOD contract with a Canadian firm? I have been told by virtually every Soldier and Marine I have met with here and on our bases in Germany that they can do the job themselves. Should I be asked to serve on the House Armed Services Committee or otherwise asked my opinion, I will work to help our national defense forces realign and prepare for the future and the type of combat they will be engaged in.

SCVTALK: Dr. Lee Rogers, one of your opponents, said in an interview with SCVTalk that he thinks the wealthy in America should pay more in taxes, at least equal to what many middle class families pay in order to help balance our budget and restore fiscal responsibility. Do you agree with him?

ACOSTA : You won’t be surprised to learn that I have a difference of opinion with Dr. Rogers on this subject. The fact of the matter is that President Obama and his ultra-rich supporters like Warren Buffet are selling a lie about how some wealthy people are taxed. The fact is that the total tax paid on the money Mr. Buffett receives is actually higher than the capital gains rate at which Warren Buffet is taxed. Mr. Buffet is allowed to choose this rate because he takes his income out as capital gains, not as dividends, which are taxed as regular income and at a higher rate. However, as with all gains and dividend income, the money is essentially taxed twice. Corporate profits are taxed first at the corporate tax rate, 35%, and then taxed again when it is received as profits by the recipient at the 15% capital gains rate as in Buffet’s case. Where the confusion lies is in the fact that our tax code has literally hundreds of thousands of deductions written into it that allow those with the means to understand it the ability to write off significant amounts of income, protecting it from taxation.

The President’s own National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform (The Simpson-Bowles Commission) that he assembled after taking office proposed a complete overhaul of the tax code to both increase revenue to the federal government and lighten the tax burden on the middle class. Though I don’t agree with every suggestion the Commission came up with, I bet that if you and I Jeff went through the Simpson-Bowles work product we’d find a lot we agree on. But the President did not. So far, he has not implemented a single provision outlined in the Simpson Bowles Commission Findings. I am inclined to believe that a simplified tax structure is the only way that we can bring parity to taxation and grow the economy simultaneously.

SCVTALK: 18% of voters in this Congressional district are decline-to-state. Why should these voters select you over Buck McKeon or Lee Rogers?

ACOSTA : They should vote for me because I am actively engaged in the community and I understand what is happening on the ground today and the issues that face the average person. As someone who experienced layoffs due to the global financial crisis I have had the same difficulties as many of them have. Also, I have helped start and run small businesses and for the past 20 years have worked as a financial advisor so I believe I am the best candidate to provide solutions that can help make things better for people of the district.

Voters are tired of 20-year incumbents like Buck McKeon who has proven himself to be ineffective at representing this district and who is beholden to special interests. Conservative leaning voters have never had a credible option before and simply had to vote for McKeon as there was no other option. In me they have that option.

SCVTALK: Illegal immigration is a divisive topic in this District. Do you like Arizona’s AB 1070 law? Should the states be able to devise their own immigration laws as Arizona has done, or is immigration a uniquely Federal responsibility?

ACOSTA :I’m sure many are concerned with illegal immigration as I am; however, our campaign has held many meeting, forums and “Meet & Greets” and this issue has only been raised one time other than your question during this campaign. Based on the questions voters have asked, it seems they are more concerned with jobs and the economy, housing prices, Cemex, corruption and nepotism with our elected officials and gas prices. As far as “liking” AB 1070, I don’t like that the citizens of Arizona felt it necessary to enact it. It shows the failure of the federal government in securing the southern border.

If the federal government finds enforcement of our immigration laws too difficult, it is up to the states to assist them. I am confident that when the Supreme Court of the United States comes back with its decision on the Arizona Immigration law later this summer, it will announce that it agrees with that premise.

SCVTALK: What do you think the Federal role is, if any, in health care?

ACOSTA : For good or bad, the federal government already plays a very large role in healthcare via Medicare, Medicaid and the Veteran’s Administration system. I believe that government has the obligation to reform Medicare and Medicaid to serve the coming generations of citizens that were promised it would be there for them. Eliminating fraud and waste could go a long way toward saving the feds money so it can keep those promises. Beyond that, we must knock down the barriers to competition that stand in the way of better care and better prices. Competition is the only way to drive down prices and drive up quality. Opening up the health insurance market to companies from out of state like the auto insurance market is one way that could happen – giving consumers the choice.

There are other cost savings that could be gained perhaps, by having fewer mandates. I have a friend that is forced, because of mandates, to purchase a policy with substance abuse, infertility, pregnancies and other provisions that it extremely unlikely he will ever use. He is a non-smoking, non-drinking, unmarried man in his late 50’s that is not likely to use those services. In a free market shouldn’t he be able to purchase a policy that fits his needs and actual risks?

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — With less than a week to go in the California primary, a powerful Southern California congressman finds himself facing his toughest test in more than a decade.

Political reporter Dave Bryan said Republican Howard “Buck” McKeon has spent much of his campaign deflecting charges, not just from the Democrats, but from his fellow Republicans as well.

The election should be a cakewalk, but by all accounts it might be close.

Says Bryan, charges of nepotism, sweetheart deals, and a nasty war of words with his former district director have made the once-solid-red 25th district anyone’s game.

The 25th district stretches from Simi Valley to Mammoth Mountain. It includes parts of Lancaster, Thousand Oaks, Santa Clarita and Palmdale.

After two decades on Capitol Hill, Santa Clarita’s first Mayor, Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon is an institution in California’s 25th congressional district. Now he’s risen to become chair of the House Armed Services Committee, one of the most powerful positions in Washington.

McKeon is so well known and liked in this district, he hasn’t had a tough race for Congress since his very first in 1992.

“Some I have had very little competition,” McKeon says, “this one there’s a lot more competition.

In fact this year’s election may be a referendum on McKeon himself. He’s been hounded by reports that he took a sweetheart deal on a mortgate refi in 1998 from Countrywide Financial. He flatly denies the charges, and says he’s not being investigated by the House Ethics committee.

Podiatrist and surgeon Lee Rogers, a Democrat who’s running against McKeon, has a different take on the Countrywide deal..

“People look at that and they say there’s two sets of rules. There’s the rules that they’re operating by and there’s the rules that the rest of us operate by.”

Is McKeon worried his opponent’s damaging words are landing? “We’ll find out next week,” he says, “I don’t believe most people believe what’s being said.”

McKeon’s wife Patricia, who, according to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington — a campaign watchdog group — made hundreds of thousands of dollars as her husband’s campaign treasurer over the years, is also running for office this year..

“She’s running for the State Assembly and she’s a hard worker,” says McKeon.

McKeon’s former district director Scott Wilk, doesn’t go along with that and he is her opponent.

They’re calling it the “Family Feud.”

His opponents, both Democrat and Republican, are charging nepotism, including fellow Republican Dante Acosta, who wears his deceased son’s dog tags, after the young man was killed in Afghanistan. Acosta says voters are fed up.

“The voters are tired of the nepotism and politics. They’re tired of the corruption and politics.”

Acosta adds, “I think he comes to it with the kind of entitlement mentality where I can run my wife for office, I don’t have to address any of the important issues, locally or on the national level.”

McKeon’s biggest problem may be the perception that he hasn’t done enough to fight against a huge, proposed gravel and sand mine, by Cemex, a corporate giant. Rogers is attacking McKeon in a new campaign video:

The battle has lasted almost a decade and McKeon says he fought it tooth and nail, but a ban on earmarks left his hands tied this year.

“I’ve been fighting Cemex for over ten years,” says McKeon, “and I’ve put several bills in. I can’t put one in this year, because it’s against the rules of the House.”

Jason Schaff is executive editor of the home town newspaper — the Santa Clarita Valley Signal. The paper declined to endorse McKeon, the 20-year incumbent, in the June 5th congressional primary, says Cemex is the most important issue to many voters in the district, but so is anger against incumbents..

“I think it goes back to the mood locally, and throughout the country about incumbents. And is 20 years too long to be in Congress?”

As a candidate for the 25th Congressional District of California, I have shared my desire to prevent the Santa Clarita Valley from becoming victim to one of this country’s largest proposed cement mines.

If allowed to begin operations, the Cemex mine in Soledad Canyon will negatively impact the quality of life we enjoy. Our roads and freeways will become even more congested with the daily transport of hundreds of truckloads of aggregate. Not only will increased traffic and noise affect area housing prices, the citizens of Santa Clarita may likely be put at greater risk for respiratory problems due to an increase in airborne particulates.

I believe hope is still on the horizon. For the last three years, various incarnations of a bill that would properly compensate Cemex for revenue lost by the cancelation of mining rights in Soledad Canyon have been considered. In exchange for mining rights, Cemex would receive proceeds from a sale of land near Victorville from the federal government — something the company has had designs on for some time. The deal is a win-win, but since introducing the Soledad Canyon Mine Act (H.R. 5887) in 2008, Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, has backed away from promoting its passage, and it has since expired.

A new bill, Senate Bill 759 is being sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., but no House companion bill is forthcoming. McKeon has been quoted as saying that his pledge to not support bills containing earmarks prevents him from sponsoring a new House bill to pair with SB 759.

While crafting H.R. 5887, and even after its demise, McKeon successfully wrangled at least one “land swap” and recently proposed yet another — neither of which involve the Cemex mine.

The 2009 Wilderness Act, a bill that McKeon sponsored with Boxer, removed 470,000 acres of federal “study area” lands from any hope of being opened up for commercial tourism or other responsible uses. In return for bowing to the extreme environmentalists on this issue, McKeon was able to secure benefits for a key special interest group in the 25th Congressional District.

Was the group composed of any of the thousands of residents who will be adversely affected by the Cemex mine? No, it benefited a group of Mammoth Lakes snowmobile enthusiasts who received special-use permits to operate their vehicles on federal lands. Opposition by recreational groups who had long desired access to the lands — now permanently out of their reach — was ignored. Most shocking, though, is that the provisions of H.R. 146, the Public Lands Management Act of 2009, were passed in an omnibus spending bill as earmarks.

If the duplicity ended there, perhaps it would not be an issue. But to add insult to injury, McKeon is again shifting federal dollars and benefits to recreationists in Mammoth with HR 2157. This bill transfers certain private lands to the federal government and vice versa. It passed out of the same committee that McKeon cites as objecting to the Cemex compromise, which he dutifully refuses to sponsor in the House.

Why is McKeon so ready to break his no-earmarks pledge to do land-swap deals that benefit recreational enthusiasts in Mammoth Lakes, but unwilling to assist the families of the Santa Clarita Valley avoid the greatest potential traffic and air-quality issues they’ve ever faced?

One of my opponents believes that a hefty $6,900 contribution to McKeon from the CEO and employees of Mammoth Mountain ski area just prior to the introduction of this bill is to blame. Still, that would not have precluded McKeon from sponsoring a new Cemex bill. My belief is that a combination of too many years in Washington, D.C., and an increasing affinity for multinational corporations over the quality of life of individual citizens is to blame.

Cemex’s governing corporation is Mexico’s Cemex S.A.B. de C.V., which operates in dozens of countries. Congressional interference in what the elite perceive to be Mexico’s right to mine on U.S. lands would likely upset a myriad of other Mexican/American relations.

I believe an understanding of how our current government views the rights of U.S. citizens when they conflict with international trade is yet another reason it’s time to retire Buck McKeon from Congress.

Dante Acosta, a financial adviser from Canyon Country, is a Republican candidate for 25th Congressional District in the June 5 primary election.

SCVNews.com published this report:

The Santa Clarita City Council voted 5-0 Tuesday to call on Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, the area’s congressman, to seek a legislative solution to the planned 56-million-ton Cemex sand and gravel mine.

If that doesn’t sound like “new” news, it’s probably because McKeon has introduced six bills over the past dozen years to thwart the so-called “mega-mining” project in Soledad Canyon that city officials and community activists believe would foul the Santa Clarita Valley’s air, water and traffic system.

None of the six bills has gotten so much as a congressional hearing.

Seventeen people signed up to address the City Council Tuesday. All were united in their message of support for a city resolution calling on McKeon to try again – and most blamed McKeon for a lack of action.

Although he is in Santa Clarita this week, McKeon did not attend the council meeting and did not send a representative to speak on his behalf.

A current bill by Sen. Barbara Boxer – S. 759 – contemplates a complex transaction in which Cemex’s federal mining contracts would be canceled in exchange for cash generated from the sale of federal land in Victorville.

McKeon has previously said Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.), chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, determined that the transfer of cash would violate a House rule banning earmarks. McKeon has refused to introduce companion legislation to Boxer’s bill on that basis.

But that’s not the only hurdle. While it endorsed similar legislation in 2008, the Victorville City Council – a party to the proposed transaction – balked at the Boxer bill in January for three reasons: It wouldn’t have the same planning authority over the particular parcels; the state eliminated redevelopment, which Victorville planned to use to improve the newly gained federal lands; and because another cement manufacturer objected to the diminution of Victorville’s mining resources.

Mike Murphy, the city of Santa Clarita’s intergovernmental relations officer, hinted Tuesday that there might be another way to get the job done – one that wouldn’t violate the House ban on earmarks and might not even involve Victorville.

“Mr. McKeon has said he can’t introduce same language he’s previously introduced because of (the earmark issue),” Murphy told the council. “That is not the only avenue available to us. (City) staff believes that (there is) an opportunity for language that stays within confines of our three goals but would not be encumbered by the earmark ban.”

The city’s three goals are to get the federal government to cancel Cemex’s two 10-year mining contracts in Soledad Canyon; compensate Cemex for the value of the contracts; and withdraw Soledad Canyon from the federal government’s list of mining sites.

The crux of the resolution adopted by the City Council on Tuesday reads as follows:

“The City Council formally requests that Representative Howard P. “Buck” McKeon work with Chairman Hastings, Cemex, and the City of Santa Clarita in developing, introducing, and having enacted into law during the 112th Congress, bi-partisan legislation that accomplishes the three key goals of the City of Santa Clarita and Cemex, and does not violate the House of Representatives rule relating to earmarks.”

Murphy ran through the history of the city’s fight to block the mine, reminding the council that “since 1999, the city has been aggressively opposing the 56-million-net-ton mine.”

The gross tonnage, counting tailings, is estimated at 78 million tons over 20 years – and that might not be the last of it.

Andrew Fried, president of SAFE Action for the Environment – a citizens group formed specifically to fight the mining project – said it’s likely the federal Bureau for Land Management would re-lease the mining site for additional 20-year periods, and other mining companies would file permits in the area to stay competitive.

Going forward with the Cemex mine would be “like intentionally planting a cancerous tumor in the heart of our community,” Fried said.

“This is the moment of truth here,” said Diane Trautman, a former city planning commissioner. “Air quality, water quality and transportation will be irreversibly impacted for possibly 100 years.”

Dr. Lee Rogers, McKeon’s Democratic rival in this year’s congressional election, criticized McKeon for his adherence to the earmark rule.

“This is a House rule,” Rogers said. “It is not a law. It can be overturned for this type of action.”

The House frequently suspends its own rules when certain bills would run afoul of them.

Tuesday’s speakers didn’t equivocate.

“I’m mad,” said Berta González-Harper of Canyon Country. “How dare (McKeon) use this earmark (rule) as an excuse? What alternative has he come up with? What besides Doc (Hastings) says we can’t do it? Nothing. This is a huge project that will irreparably change this valley. This is not something we can undo after it’s done.”

Councilman Bob Kellar, who with Murphy and others met last week with representatives of Sens. Boxer and Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., expressed similar frustrations.

“We’re nervous,” Kellar said. “We’re worried.”

“As we all know, (Boxer’s bill) needs a companion bill in the House. That’s the rub.”

“Our senators are willing to resolve this,” said Councilman TimBen Boydston. “(McKeon) is the reason it is not passing.”

“If you want to see what (the Cemex mine) would look like,” said Councilwoman Laurene Weste, “just go down to Irwindale. We need to remain united as a community. We cannot have this.”

Kellar urged Santa Clarita residents to visit SAFE’s website, safe4environment.org, and sign an online petition demanding federal action.

More than 5,000 signatures were collected in a few short weeks, but “we need to get this to 10,000, 15,000,” Kellar said. “We have got to absolutely just run them over: We demand that they represent the people.”

Dr. Rogers won an auction for lunch donated by Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon at a charity fundraiser to support College of the Canyons, an important local education institution.

After reading web postings that Dr. Rogers was unable to schedule a date after numerous attempts, Mr. Acosta reached out to Dr. Rogers.

“I know from firsthand experience the difficulty in obtaining a meeting with Congressman McKeon and the how frustrating it can be dealing with his office, so I decided to offer to have lunch with Dr. Rogers myself and he has agreed,” Acosta said. “I also told Dr. Rogers to invite any members of the media he wishes, I’m not afraid to speak in front of the press.”

“It is so important for a representative to be willing to listen to and engage with the community. It is part of their job to work with ALL members of the community, Democrat or Republican to get things done. I have very strong principles and will no doubt have differences with Dr. Rogers but if you are not willing to listen and discuss issues, how will you know what do you agree on? I look forward to being able to discuss the important local issues like stopping the Cemex mega-mine and bringing more jobs to the district as well as federal issues such as the war in Afghanistan and the national debt.” Mr. Acosta added.

Mr. Acosta and Dr. Rogers agreed to hold their “Lunch Summit” on March 27th in Santa Clarita and will invite the press to dine with them.

Dante Acosta is a Gold Star Father, twenty-year financial advisor, pro-military advocate and noted speaker. He is an active member and volunteer in his community. Since the death of his son, U.S. Army SPC Rudy Acosta, one year ago, Mr. Acosta has been an outspoken advocate for our military’s force protection protocols.
